The Hawaii Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society
Also known as the "Vireya" club, the Hawaii Chapter -ARS has over 100 members worldwide. The chapter is based on the Big Island of Hawaii in the city of Hilo. Members meet on the 3rd Sunday of each month. A typical meeting consists of a pot luck lunch at 12 pm with some of the best desserts in Hilo followed by a meeting at 1 pm. Regular activities include a silent auction, a plant auction, and a vireya truss give-away.
The club's monthly newsletter "Viva Vireya" is well worth the ARS membership fee of $35 for the year as an added bonus to other benefits such as the ARS Journal.. Or, you can receive our monthly newsletter only, no ARS membership, for $15 per year.
The Hawaii Chapter also handles the vireya seed distribution exchange. Hybridizers from around the world send seed for redistribution. Seeds are $1 a packet. A helpful aid also available is a paper on vireya seed germination , written by Mr. Bill Moyles, also for $1. Contact me for the latest seed list.
